Last year, the above picture happened. And you might not see anything wrong with it, because zinnias are lovely, right? Well, to read more about it, here's the original post. Needless to say, I didn't want a repeat of my zinnias taking over my vegetable garden. Don't get me wrong. I adore zinnias. I love their sturdiness and vibrant colors and the way they attract butterflies and bees. But I also love seeing my green bean plants and other yummies growing healthy, too. This year, as our green beans began poking their little seedling heads up through the dirt, I noticed we were in for a repeat if I didn't do something about it. Last year, I had thinned out the zinnias some, hoping that would help, but well ... you saw the picture above. This year, I had to do more.
EVERY. SINGLE. ZINNIA that has popped up in my veggie garden has been yanked up by its tender roots and either replanted elsewhere or discarded. Y'all, it about broke my heart to discard those flowers, knowing how beautiful they would've been. But, I also knew if I let them have the run of my garden, my veggies would suffer for it. So, I now have tons of zinnias in my front bed, some growing well by my back porch, and even a few in the neighbor's yard (because I like to share). And, I have hearty, healthy veggie plants (minus a few chewed on pieces by the caterpillars that have taken over). It's a win-win. I had to trade out the good for the better. There was nothing intrinsically wrong with having zinnias where they were. But it's better this other way. And I'm sure there are other places in my life that need the same firm hand. Because even if something isn't bad in and of itself, that doesn't mean it can't cause harm if we leave it as is. Can you think of some places like that? Have you ever had to trade the good for the better?

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
