See these flowers? Aren't they great? They came up volunteer this year! I think I had maybe two or three come up from seeds last year, and this year, a whole garden full of them. I adore zinnias, so I was super excited when they first started popping up. And then, I got a little worried. You see, I also had green beans planted in those spots. Well, most of my green plants came up and have done fairly well, too--eighteen pints and counting. But as the flowers grew, what had once been exciting and happy started having some negative consequences. The zinnias grew taller, making it harder for me to get to the green bean plants and pick the veggies. They also attracted more bugs. And started blocking some of the sunlight.
And some grew so thickly that, even after I thinned them out quite a bit, they still choked out my green bean plants and kept them from reaching their full potential. A good thing had turned bad. Sometimes, we see something and it looks so pretty and wonderful and we think it's going to be a great thing in our lives. And then, it starts choking out what really matters. Like when we allow other things to take time away from Bible study or spending time with our family. Social media anyone? It's definitely a time stealer. It's a great thing, too, helping us stay connected with friends and family. But too much of a good thing ... You the idea. As my garden starts to grow next year, I know I'm going to be more aware and careful of what I let take over the beds I have set aside for veggies. I'll thin out flowers or plant around them better. And as for things like social media ... well, I'm working on thinning that out some, too. What about you? Got anything you need thinned out in your life?

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
