When you receive a gift card, do you want to spend it right away? Or save it for something special? Well, let me tell you, it's hard on kids to wait. After all, they want think they should be able to spend money or gift cards the moment they receive it. Especially my son. Especially if it's for a place that has donuts or ice cream. Or both. Needless to say, the gift card he'd received way back on his birthday in August was burning a hole in his pocket by the time Christmas had come and we still hadn't used it. During the summer, he'd had a gift card for an ice cream place, so he decided to use it when we went to visit his Grandpa. They both went and got a treat together one afternoon. It was great.
So, when Grandpa was coming here for a late Christmas with us, he pulled out the other gift card and decided he'd do the same thing. He and Grandpa would go get a treat together. Then, he thought about it some more. What if he spent his gift card and bought enough donuts for everyone to have breakfast? Could he do that? Let me tell you, once this child has something in his head, he's PERSISTENT. He would not quit asking until we finally agreed on the last day. His dad took him and they brought back a box of donuts for us to all share for breakfast. When his sister started to reach for a second donut, it was pointed out to her that she might ought to ask her brother if she could have more than one. He looked up, confused. "Why should she ask me?" The donuts were for everyone, in his head. He didn't even realize that because they were bought (mostly) with his money, he had the right to refuse someone from getting more than one. That's the way his heart works. Money, to him, (most of the time) is more fun spent on something he can share with others. Wow. Oh, for a heart like that, right? When we get a little extra money or a gift card, do we automatically think of what we can buy for ourselves? Or do we sometimes think, "ooh, now I can treat my friend next time we get together." It's not that there's anything wrong with only spending it on yourself. After all, you're the recipient. But how would it be if we did sometimes think, "ooh. How can I share this to brighten someone else's day too?" Do you spend your gift cards well?

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
