Are you or your spouse more romantic? Do your romantic gestures shine brighter during certain times of life? Guest author Lydia MacClaren is sharing with us today some moments that stick out in her memory. My husband is more romantic than I am. He’s the one who thinks of small gifts of chocolate and flowers. He is the one who suggests grabbing coffee together or going out to try a new dessert. He thinks up cheesy declarations of love that he gives with much confidence and a kiss on the cheek. Yes, he’s the romantic one. I’m the pragmatic one. But, when I consider the most romantic gestures that he has made in our relationship, what comes to mind first isn’t the elaborate plans he’s thought long and hard over that belong in a romance novel, it’s the ones he’s made in the thick of difficult situations. The words “for better or worse” were part of our vows, and while it’s easy to overlook those promises in the joy of a wedding, they hold a tremendous weight. Life is full of the “worse” moments and they can be trying to walk through as a couple. When the sparkle of a beautiful wedding begins to fade and real life takes its place, the “worse” quickly reveals itself. The habits that begin to grate, the car that keeps having trouble, the house that reveals an expensive problem you’d been ignorant of, or health that turns from excellent to awful in a moment… it all tries the marriage and romance can quickly fall aside amid real life cares and concerns. But, these moments can also be the rocky ground in which the most romantic moments can blossom. During an unexpected health crisis in my life, my husband was my stalwart support, pointing me to our shared faith in Christ, and there at my side through appointments and disappointments. Through those difficult times, his spur-of-the-moment romantic gestures became bright points that made me feel loved and cherished though we walked through something neither of us expected. A note here, a piece of chocolate there, a coffee date after an appointment, or flowers delivered after a procedure. These little moments he thought of while romance was the last thing on my mind nourished our relationship and stand out as the most romantic things he has ever done for me. Real life comes with real trials, and true romance thrives in the midst of them. Lydia MacClaren has been writing stories since her earliest memories. Once a powerful king, he is now a soul cursed to remain tethered for eternity to the Wise One, his murderer and the only god left in the world. But the god offers him a deal. If he saves seven lives, the god will grant him a second life. Kathka accepts the deal, willing to do whatever necessary to obtain a new life and accomplish what he could not in his first - kill the Wise One. However, the world he returns to has changed. A new empire reigns, presided over by the religious cult of the Bu Chak that searches for those cursed by the gods, including Kathka. Surrounded by new technology and a culture he does not understand, Kathka flees for his own life while seeking the seven he is tasked to save. As the world continues to crumble, Kathka cannot ignore the rising doubt that he may not be able to save even one.

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
