Who is writing your love story? Fellow author Allison Pearl is my guest today, talking about who she wants writing hers. You make memories. You make friends and careers and plans. You make love. You make a future. You make a life. And you do it together. But life isn’t all scrapbooks, barbeques, holidays, and fun. Life is hard. Life can suck. For every amazing moment my husband, Daniel, and I have had in our twelve years of marriage, there’s been a heartbreaking one too. And for two kids raised in church who thought they’d approached their marriage just right, this was a shock. It was more than a shock, it was an embarrassment. One we tried to hide, even from each other. We thought we’d failed. After all, none of the other couples we knew seemed to have the same problems. No one is taking snapshots and posting on the internet the moments spent snapping at each other in the car as you fight over whether the GPS wants you to take the next right or the one you just passed. No one is posting a cute selfie during an argument over who didn’t take out the dog, do the dishes, change the laundry loads, or take the frozen chicken out of the freezer. These moments aren’t showing up on Instagram, but they are happening nonetheless. And now these moments are happening while we are quarantined in our homes, wondering about the state of our country, our jobs, and just when exactly we’re going to get COVID. Because considering we’ve already lost money, freedom, movies, and nights out, a positive COVID test is just inevitable, right? Without distractions and trapped within our four walls, the conversations we’ve been avoiding aren’t going to be so easy to ignore. My advice. Don’t ignore them at all. Have the serious conversations. Fight. Argue. And stop acting like there’s something wrong with that. Stop trying to hide it. Marriage is real and so we need to be real. Real and honest. Jesus didn’t lie when he said the truth will set us free, and he also didn’t lie when he said we need to abide in his word. Have the fights, but don’t forget to bring into them the ultimate voice of love and reason. Jesus isn’t going to end your fights; He’s going to win them. Let Him. Your church doors might be closed right now because of the pandemic, but the church isn’t a building. Reach out to your pastors, spiritual leaders and counselors without being ashamed or embarrassed. They know what you’re going through. They’ve been through it too. It’s okay to not be okay, but don’t let that turn into complacency. Pray for strength. Pray for wisdom. And above all, let God and his word lead you, overcome you, and inspire you. Let’s stop hiding the fact that our marriages need him to thrive. I may write my character’s love stories on the page, but I want Jesus to hold the pen in my own. Because His story doesn’t just save our marriages, it saves our souls. This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
