I full admit to being a creature of habit. Not only that, but I also sometimes get into a rut. Since moving here, I've taught the second grade Bible class every other quarter for about four years ... maybe longer. When you teach the same curriculum, you tend to go to the same crafts and activities every time. Needless to say, when they switched up the curriculum this year, it threw me off a bit. Don't get me wrong. I'm doing most of the same stories. but not in exactly the same order. Or broken up the same way. Etc. They also rearranged how they divided the kids, so now I have second and third grades both. Which means a few of those students are having me two years in a row. Sorry, guys. I know you did a lot of these crafts last year, but you've probably lost them between then and now so it won't kill you to do them again. Sigh. Here's the other thing that's throwing me off:
I'm BUSY! Like, busier than ever it feels like. Between working the tax specialist job, the preschool job, the editing job, and writing/marketing my own works, some days I work from the time I drop kids off until I go to bed at night. Or at least, it feels that way. Which means I don't have as much time to do things like prepping crafts. Where we are, there is a group called the Tuesday Too's. They're a bunch of sweet ladies who get together on Tuesday mornings and help prep crafts, make copies, cut things out, find visual aides, etc., for the Bible teachers. Awesome, right? I agree. But I've never really used them before because I'm so stubborn, I've always just done it all myself. Guess what? I'm using them at least a few times right now. At least on the more complicated craft weeks. And it's a good thing. But, I have to step back and let them help me. I can't just assume it will be exactly the same as if I had done it myself. And if it's not, it doesn't mean it's bad. Just different. For instance, we just talked about Ruth, and I always do this bookmark craft where you weave ribbon through the holes to make it look like kernels of grain--maybe what Ruth would've gleaned. I usually use thick ribbon that has some tape at the end like a shoelace. This gives it a nice puffy appearance. The ladies decided it would be easier on the kids and less likely to tear the holes (and they're right--by the way), if we used curling ribbon like you use for wrapping gifts. It didn't turn out the way it has in the past, but it still looks neat. And, each time the child sees that bookmark in their Bible, they can remember how Ruth gleaned because God made sure she was taken care of. If I hadn't relinquished my hold on it and let them help me, it would've been sad for two reasons. One, I would've been extra-stressed trying to get everything ready. Two, they wouldn't have been able to bless me by helping prep my craft. That's right, not only were they a blessing to me, but I was a blessing to them by allowing them to help and serve. I'm not good at relinquishing control or letting others help me. But I need to do it more. Because it was so nice to have all that work done and not have to worry about it. And the kids enjoyed the craft just as much as if it had been done "my way." Do you have trouble giving up control? Have you ever had to step back and admit there are more ways than just yours?

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
