How long does it take to cause a burn like this one? Just a second. At least, that's all it took for me. Reaching in for pizza and my wrist grazed the side of the 425 degree oven. And it hurt, in case you were wondering. Isn't it crazy how short a time it takes for something to hurt us for much longer (like when I scratched the itchy spot a week later before realizing it was the scab on my burn--and it started hurting again)? Heat, bee stings, ant bites, thorns on a plant. Even touching something like poison ivy can lead to days and days of misery.
But things that aren't physical are just as dangerous, though we don't always give them as much wiggle room. What am I talking about? What about a song that has some questionable lyrics? If you're like me, it's probably the one that will replay over and over in your head the rest of the day despite having listened to several others, too. What about a movie with scenes full of sinful actions? Does it leave ideas in your head that you might not want there? If you read certain words enough times, do they get stuck in your brain and sometimes slip out when you don't mean for them to? But you only saw them for a second. Mm, hm. We learn to avoid bees and hot ovens and poison ivy. But are we avoiding the things that can hurt us spiritually, too? Because if you're around something for enough seconds, eventually it's going to hurt you. What do you think? Do you have good ways to avoid the thorns of this world?

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
