Have you ever made resurrection rolls? If not, let me explain a little about what they are and how they work. Basically, it's a fun recipe to do with your kids around Easter to help explain the story of the resurrection. It's a cinnamon-sugar covered marshmallow inside a crescent roll. The marshmallow represents Jesus and the roll the tomb. When they bake, the marshmallow disappears, leaving only an empty tomb. Here's an easy recipe we've been using. Except this year, something went wrong. I don't know if it was the marshmallows were too old or too new (we used part of two different packs). Or if I didn't have the temperature or time right or what. But when we opened up a few of our "tombs," they weren't empty!
Gasp! That's no good because Jesus definitely rose from the dead and wasn't in that tomb. My children puzzled it out among themselves. And as I stood there, listening, not sure what to say, they came up with a story much better than I could have. My seven-year-old: "You know, Jesus left his material He was wrapped in behind in the tomb. That's probably what this is. Not Jesus." Whoa. Seven-year-old: "Or maybe it's the angel waiting to tell Mary that Jesus isn't there." She never for a minute jumped to the conclusion that Jesus didn't raise from the dead. Instead, she came up with three or four scenarios of why there was a marshmallow still in the roll. Granted, it's just a recipe. And doesn't mean anything one way or another. But it showed her faith, even at such a very young age, is so strong. How many adults would be able to come up with that many different people/things it could be? Or would they even bother? Regardless, it made me rather proud. And also made me want to do even better in my own faith. When things go wrong, I don't always have to jump to the worst conclusion. And everything will be okay in the long run because we KNOW that Jesus rose from the dead. And isn't that more powerful than anything else we talk about around Easter? Is your faith as strong as my daughter's?
