Are you waiting for Spring? I start getting anxious for it around Valentine's day each year. Don't get me wrong. I love that we have four seasons. I just prefer for winter to not take too terribly long. The dull days and the cold get me down. Over the last few years, my gardens have become a great joy for me. Not necessarily the pulling weeds part, but the watching the things I mean to grow part. And my front bed is filling up with various bulbs. Why? Well, at least in part because they're pretty easy for a semi-lazy gardener. And they're gorgeous. But also because they're some of the first flowers to pop up when winter releases its hold. Daffodils are like a herald of better things to come. They're so bright and happy. Even if we have a few more cold and dreary days, I can see their bright yellow heads and smile.
Bulbs are amazing to me. If you get them in the ground at the right time, not too deep and not too high, and keep the pests from nibbling on them, they come back each year, and usually bring friends as they tend to spread and make more flowers, too. Right now, I've got daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, and irises all planted in the front garden, along with various other things like daisies and azaleas and a rose bush. Along my fence, I have a row of day lilies, which usually bloom between Easter and Mother's day. They all sit under the ground all fall and winter (and most of the summer, too), doing nothing but resting. And then when those first springtime sunshine rays come out, so do they. And while I sometimes think the daffodils might pop up too early, they always seem to make it anyway. Because God has made them to where they know exactly what to do and when to do it. They know the right time. As people, it's not always easy to snuggle down in the darkness--waiting or rejection or saving money or anything else that keeps us from achieving a goal--but if we wait until just the right time, our bloom will be beautiful. Right now, I'm dealing with some rejection. And some waiting. So, I'm trying to snuggle in, pray and study and enjoy the here-and-now. And then, when the conditions are right, maybe another dream will happen to. Easier said than done, for sure, but always worth it. Do you have a favorite bulb you've planted? Have you ever taken a lesson from a daffodil? What makes you think of Spring?
