Again and Again

I first read Pride and Prejudice back in high school. It took me about six weeks to get through because of the older language and it was harder than a lot of other books I had read back then. In college, I took multiple courses that led me to read more novels written in that era, including several others of Jane Austen. Having a professor to help me walk through it led to a greater understanding and a greater appreciation of it.
Since graduating, I have read all six of Jane Austen's novels (only six!) more than once. And seen several of the movie adaptations. And you know what? I'm happy to read them again and again.

A lot of people assume Jane Austen wrote romance, and in some ways, she did. But more than that, she wrote books that gave a real view into the lives of people. And she did it with snark and sarcasm. I love it. British humor just makes me happy.
Almost every year, I read at least one of Jane Austen's books again. This year, I'm going back through Pride and Prejudice. It's one of my favorites, though I adore Emma and Northanger Abbey too. But the local theatre is putting on a performance of P&P this weekend, and I'm headed to see it with some friends. It's a story that never gets old. I have no idea how many times I've reread it and I always notice something new or laugh again at the familiar lines. 
As an author, Jane Austen gives me an appreciation of the written word as well as the hope that one day my stories will be read over and over again just like hers. Do I think mine are as good? I think they're different. We'll leave it at that.
