When people find out I can sew, I never know what I'll be asked to do. Obviously, hemming pants and dresses is a main thing, and it doesn't take long, so I don't mind. I have to do it for myself so much, it's fairly rote. Then, there's taking in prom dresses, or adding something to straps to make them more modest, which I appreciate. Because I hate how immodest things have become, and love helping girls fight that battle. Though it's not always easy due to the fabric. Occasionally, I'll be asked to recover a footstool or make new cushions for a rocking chair. One time I did a whole nursery, including the crib bumpers and skirt. Whew! So many ruffles! And then there's extra special projects. What makes a project extra special?
The memories incorporated in it. Mending a quilt someone's ancestor made. Taking baby clothes and turning them into teddy bears. And the shirt pillows pictured above. When my friend asked me to make her sister's shirts into pillows for various family members, I knew I couldn't say "no." Especially when pillows aren't hard to make. Some of it took a bit of logistics to make sure I could line up buttons or sew around a dart, but I think they turned out really cute. And now her family will have those memories incorporated into their home decorations. My mom has made a t-shirt quilt for all of her kids, taking shirts we weren't ever going to wear again and turning them into something else where we could still have the memories that go with them. I've also seen aprons made from shirts, bags made from shirts, etc. So many great ways to use things you don't want to get rid of but won't ever use again. "Sew special," to be punny. I have a feeling my character, Beth, from my novella releasing in September, would be all over making items like this. ;-) Do you have something special made from an item a loved one used to own? Or have you ever done something like this where you turned their item into something more useful? How do you like to hold onto memories?

Recognize a couple of things. Just wanted to say thank you again. We will cherish the memories of our loved ones whether a grandchild or sister.

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
