How far would you go to impress your future father-in-law? That's right, I said FUTURE. Well, guest author Meghann Whistler is here today to talk about her real-life romance when she did just that. Read on. I met my husband on a blind date in Boston in September 2003, during my last semester of grad school. I’d been single for about a year and half before I met him, and I’d been on my fair share of bad blind dates during that time, so I didn’t have high hopes. That all changed, however, when I met him. Paul was tall and handsome, and he was Canadian, like me! He was also kind and polite, and after dinner, we stayed out talking until two o’clock in the morning. It wasn’t long before we fell in love. 💕 The next summer, my family invited him to vacation with us on Cape Cod. One morning, we all went to our favorite Cape Cod restaurant and enjoyed one of our favorite Cape Cod pastries: a Meltaway Danish. Here’s part of the speech my sister gave at my wedding about how one of Paul’s actions during that trip convinced her that he was the man for me: “We had our meltaway, and it was delicious. Then my dad decided he wanted the half-eaten meltaway off the next table over, where the people had just gotten up and left. “So my dad turns to my brother and says, ‘Michael, get that pastry for me.’ And my brother pulls a face and says, ‘No way! I’m not going to take food off someone else’s table and eat it.’ “Never one to give up easily, my dad turns to Paul and says, ‘Paul, will you get the pastry for me?’ Paul hesitates for only a split second before replying, ‘Uh, uh, sure.’ Then he leans back, makes a big calamity with the plates, gets the pastry… and then my dad ate it. “So that was the moment I realized that this guy will do anything for my sister.” The whole incident was embarrassing at the time, but now it’s a family legend! 🤣 Of course, snagging half-eaten pastries for my father wasn’t the only way Paul’s actions revealed how he felt about me. There was the time I totaled my car, cleared it out before abandoning it at the junkyard, got home, and realized I’d left my lucky Hello Kitty angel dangling from the dash. I called Paul in tears. He didn’t have a car, so he took a cab to the junkyard and retrieved my little winged cat. There was the time my uncle was taken off life support, and Paul sat with me for hours afterward as I cried and cried. The time I got a flat tire, and he rode his bike for thirty minutes to fix it for me. The time I got locked out of my apartment for two days, and he skipped work to stay home and accept the Fed Ex package containing my key. We’ve been married for almost twenty years now, but it’s still fun—and romantic—to think back on those early days and all the ways my husband first showed me that he cared. 😊 So, what about you. This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
