Know what my ten-year-old daughter is excited about this summer? If you guessed shelling peas, you're right! But I bet you probably didn't. Because who gets excited about shelling peas? Apparently, my children. When I brought home the seeds and we planted them, she said, "I'm so excited. I've always wanted to shell peas." And it caught me off guard. This is the first time we've tried peas in our garden. Full disclosure, we haven't picked many yet. Enough for each of us to have a few bites. But we've snapped green beans and shucked corn and enjoyed several other veggies from gardens in the past. So, it never crossed my mind that shelling peas might be something my child would wish for.
I honestly don't even know where she learned about it. Probably from a book. Those tend to teach us well about things we've never experienced before. As I thought about it more--and watched her excitement in doing something most would consider mundane--I wondered why more of us can't find excitement in something so simple. We don't have to have fancy gadgets and electronics and other doodads to have fun. We can take pleasure in the blessings God has put all around us. Including a bite of sweet new peas freshly shelled from our own garden. What's something simple you've found pleasure in lately? When's the last time you shelled peas?

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
