My husband is about to stop letting me go to the store. Not really, but there has been a trend lately. This time of year, many stores are getting rid of plants in order to make room for fall items. Yes, it's only July, but it's after the fourth. That means school supplies and fall decorations will soon take over the aisles. And I am taking advantage of the marked down flowers. Pots of daisies and on clearance for under $2? Yes, please! Are they in the best shape? No. But they're not dead yet. As I was checking out with that pot of zinnias pictured above, the cashier looked at me sideways and said, "Maybe you should water them." I had to laugh. I had plans for these flowers.
Remember a few weeks ago when I mentioned I had let the weeds and phlox take over my front flower garden to the point that my zinnias didn't come back up? Well, for a $1, I had had a whole pot of zinnias again. My sweet husband dug me a hole, I ripped out the grass in that area, and in the dirt they went. I shipped off the deadheads and watered them well. And now they have a fighting chance. Best part? Zinnias usually reseed themselves so if I can keep these doing well the rest of the summer, I should have some pop back up next year too. Assuming I can keep the weeds from growing back up again. I have another spot I planted some daisies in that I got for almost as good a deal at Kroger. I adore daisies so I was super excited about that. Just because flowers are looking a little sad, it doesn't mean they're worthless. Just a bit of love can bring them back for weeks more of beauty and happiness. Is it worth it to put in a bit of effort and have that pleasure? So many times we give up on things because they're starting to be a bit old or wilted, but if we take just a bit more time, we can enjoy them longer. Do you resuscitate plants? Or do you give up on them at the first sign of brown spots?
