The first foot pedal I learned to use wasn't in a vehicle. It was attached to a sewing machine. I fully admit I have a rather charmed life. I had two grandmothers and a mother who knew how to sew (along with several aunts). I grew up knowing about quilting and crochet and embroidery and cross stitch. Doing crafts. Baking. Gardening and canning. Entering items in the fair to see if we could win a ribbon. Am I as good as the women who came before me at doing all these things? Probably not. But I carry on the traditions of "homemaker" as best I can, pulling out the sewing machine and preserving veggies in the summer. And my children see me doing it, which means hopefully we'll have another generation after me to carry it forward again. Why am I talking about all this? Because I realized recently how much I take it all for granted. Every Easter I pull out the pin you see above, a cute little pink bunny. It's obviously seen better days, but I wear it anyway, because my grandmother made it for me when I was younger. And it's special.
A few years back, I decided to replicate the style of the pin and make more to hand out to teachers as an Easter surprise. We went through scraps of fabric to pick pastels in florals and polka dots and cut out bunnies. I sewed them up around a leftover piece of quilt batting and stitched on eyes and a bow and a pin on back. Ta da. My children are thrilled to be able to hand a sweet little goodie to their teachers. Everyone oohs and ahhs over them. And I think about how easy it was to stitch up a few, even during this busy time of year. And as I realized how much I take things like that for granted, I became grateful all over again that I grew up the way I did, knowing how to do a simple little craft like that, having the stash of supplies to be able to, and having children who want to learn. So, instead of saying I have a charmed life, let's say I have a blessed one. What's something the generations before you have passed on that you sometimes catch yourself taking for granted? Do you keep any of the old "homemaker" traditions alive in your house? Do you have any special little something you pull out each holiday that was given by a grandmother years before? I hope you all have a very happy Easter this weekend!

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
