His whole life, my son has had us pray with him right before bedtime. Sometimes, we do it all together as a family and sometimes it's either my husband or me with him one-on-one while the other prays with our daughter. In the last few months, my son has worked up the courage to say some prayers himself. And I am learning a lot from my eight-year-old, watching his faith grow. First and foremost, that he listens when his daddy and I are praying. Because while we do keep it semi-formal, we also are very conversational in the way we talk to God. It is a conversation for us. So, as we do with any other conversation, we add side-notes or just state things the way they are. And my son does too. For instance, the other night he prayed, "Thanks for almost everything that happened today." I have no idea what had occurred that day that he didn't like or wasn't thankful for, but he was so ... real about it. He wasn't thankful for all of it, so he didn't thank God for all of it. Are we that honest? I think probably not. If you're like me, you probably say, "Thanks for everything."
Another thing I love about my son's prayers is how he obviously trusts that God will make what he asks for happen. We have a friend who was injured pretty seriously right before Christmas. We've been praying for her the whole time and great improvements have happened, but she is still mending. He prayed that God would "heal her up great" or something like that. He wants her all the way better and it never even crosses his mind that God might have other plans. In our congregation, we've had several members diagnosed with cancer and have had extra prayers just for them. We've been praying along the lines of "God, we know you can do this. We ask that you do and help us to trust you, no matter what." Because God can do anything. We don't have to wonder about His abilities. We simply have to trust His plans. Oh, to have a faith like my children. To know I can talk to God just like I talk to a friend, that I can and should be honest with Him, and that He can do all things. What were some things your children prayed for when they first started? Did you learn anything from them?

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
