Do you have a recipe that means something to your family? Or a recipe that makes you think of times when you were all together? I'm reading a book right now called The Divine Proverb of Streusel by Sara Brunsvold. It follows a girl dealing with a lot of issues in her life who hides away for a while at the family's old farm. There, she finds a handwritten notebook full of old family recipes and some advice and proverbs to go with it. I highly recommend the book. It's so good. But it's definitely making me want to bake and cook more. Along with some other things that have happened in my life. I lost a sweet aunt early last week. It happened completely unexpectedly and we'll never know why. She was only 69. It has me yearning for things that make me think of times with my family in the past.
Last night, I made cookies called oatmeal chippers. They were some often found at my Grandma's house, though I hadn't made them in long enough that my kids didn't even know about them. The recipe I have is written in Grandma's handwriting. It calls for nutmeg and cinnamon and oats added to a recipe that looks a lot like regular chocolate chip. I made them to take to a family gathering today. As well as to eat some myself. And I talked to another aunt, one I'm really close to, though we live two states apart now. We caught up on each other's lives and talked about the one we'd lost. Discussed plans and memories. Family is a big deal to me (in case you can't tell from how often it plays a huge role in my books). And food is something wrapped up in my family memories. Different meals we'd often have at different homes or seasons. Desserts. Restaurant orders. They bring back memories of the ones who have gone before us. Draw us closer to the ones still here. So, do you have family recipes that make you think of family?

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
