I finally got comfortable with myself when I was around 30. Know how I can tell? I decided to dye some of my hair bright pink. Just a bit of peekaboo color under the top layer, so that it showed when I pulled some back or the wind blowed. My husband loved it. I loved it. My dad thought I'd lost my mind. We didn't have kids yet back then. That was right before we started the more intensive fertility treatments. And I just needed something different. I never really thought about what would happen down the road. Since then, I have added some color to my hair several more times. It's something fun and playful and feels a bit like my creativity showing. And yes, I've done it even after having kids (my daughter is ten now). So, when my sister decided to let her daughter dye the tips of her hair with koolaide a few years ago, it didn't faze me. But I still wasn't thinking about closer to home, either.
And then, this year, my daughter asked if she could do that for the summer. They can't have unnatural colors in their hair during the school year. I warned her that it might still be in her hair at the end of the summer and we'd have to cut that part off. "That's okay," she replied. So, this past weekend, I picked up a couple packets of koolaide (there used to be more flavors, I thought. Or maybe my Walmart is just ridiculous and not well-stocked.). We boiled the water and soaked her hair in the mix for twenty minutes. And ... voila. Bright red tips. She's thrilled, although there were some moments of panic when some of it washed out in the shower. There's still plenty left for a fun summer 'do. And now I'm trying to decide if I can sit in such a way to do just a few pieces of my hair with koolaide (much cheaper than having it dyed at the salon) so I can have fun summer hair too. Have you ever added a fun color to your hair? Or done something else that people wondered if that was really your personality or not? How does your creativity come out in unusual ways?

My life has an “open book” style, so I don’t do many things that surprise people who know me. However, my youngest grandkids had trouble picturing me on a slalom water ski when I told them about my adventures this weekend. I have not been the athletic type for years. But yes, I did enjoy the freedom of gliding along the top of the water behind a boat!

This is a place for me to share thoughts and ideas not just related to writing. Thoughts about what's going on in my life, about an idea I got that I thought shareworthy, or just a funny anecdote.
